Wu Mei comes out in the story as a unwanted child who the whole family thinks that she is a bad luck to the family just because her mom died giving birth to her. Her mind and her heart are always depressed and emotional because there is nobody to comfort her whenever she gets hurt or lonely. However, she loves her school because gets compliments for her excellent grades and she makes new friends who would be like her family in a different environment.

 

Nai Nai (grandmother)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Adeline’s  grandmother on her father’s side. Unfortunately, she died very early in the story, which changed how things were at her house a lot for Adeline because Nai Nai took care of almost everything. After Nai Nai died Niang (the stepmother) had to take care of everything which let Niang have the nerves to treat the kids unfairly.
 

Ye Ye (grandfather)

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Adeline’s grandfather is also on the father’s side. He was quiet but he loved the kids very much as he would give them gifts. However, he didn’t have any power in the family to control anything to do the way he would want.

Aunt Baba is one of the most important people for Adeline because she helped Adeline become and grow to be a strong girl by telling her and comforting her. We can say that Aunt Baba tried to fill in for Adeline’s mom, but the only things she could do for Adeline is comfort her because she didn’t have much power to control in the family.

Big sister doesn’t really come out much in the story. She is one of Adeline’s siblings from same mother. One day her father and Niang introduces her to a guy for an arranged marriage. Unfortunately, the big sister and a 30 year old man gets married in a young age and that’s all we can know about her in this story.

 

Small Sister and Fourth BrotherS

 

Adeline’s half sister and brother. They are very well taken care of because Niang favors them over the other siblings.

 

Big brother and Second Brother

They don't come out much in the story but they are Adeline’s same mother and father siblings. They also bullies Adeline because they think their mother died because of her. They tease or harasses her whenever they feel like it.

 

Third Brother

We can know that Third Brother was a very selfish sibling to Adeline because he sometimes comes out in the story as a close friend to Adeline, but sometimes he will switch his sides and betray Adeline.

One of Wu Mei’s best friends, and her pet duckling. She received it from a family friend as a gift when all of her siblings received one each. It died because of an incident when the father asked one of the siblings to bring out a duckling to test out the dog’s training skills and unfortunately PLT was the chosen one. PLT was Wu Mei’s best friend at that time which Wu Mei trusted and loved. the name PLT stands for Precious Little Treasure.

She is a half French American who is married to an older guy, Adeline’s father, and gives birth to two children of her own.  She treats her stepchildren's very unfairly and favors her own child. She is especially mean to Adeline because she knows that her family thinks Adeline is a bad luck to the family.

He is an irresponsible father because he doesn’t really care about his child’s feelings and sometimes he doesn’t even know his kid’s name. He also gets very violent when he gets mad but he is very rich, so he can control over anything he wants to do or what his family wants to do.
