Opium War:

a war between Great Britain and China that began in 1839 due to a conflict over the opium trade and ended in 1842 with China signing the Treaty of Nanking

 

Treaty of Nanking:

a treaty signed by China as a consequence of the Opium War where they had to give Hong Kong, open five Chinese ports to foreign merchants, and give other privileges to British

 

Foot Binding:

a custom of applying tight bandages to the feet of a young girl in order to prevent it from growing, which was taken in as beauty

 

Mantras:

(originally from Buddhism or Hinduism) a word or formula, as from the Veda, chanted or sung as an incantation or prayer

 

Chinese New Year:

most important social and economic holiday in China, traditional Chinese New Year starts at middle of December until middle of January with the full moon

 

Qiapo:

a form-fitting, knee-length dress with a mandarin collar and slit skirt,worn chiefly by Chinese women

 

Communists:

a person who supports or believes in the principles of communism

 

Communism:

a political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs

 

Chauffeur:

a person employed to drive a private or rented automobile

 

Liberation Army:

People’s Liberation Army also known as (PLA) is the largest military force of China under leadership of the Communist
